Bela watched as the others walked away. Sam kept an eye on her for a second before going back to pretending that he wasn't just bursting with questions to ask Dean.
Then she turned on her heel and started her retreat before stopping. Dean was just standing there looking blank. Bruised, beaten, but mostly blank. “Here I was thinking chivalry was dead,” she said, “when apparently it's just mute. Please, don't trouble yourself with an explanation. I prefer that you look at me in disgust. After all it's not as if I was there all those months, years...however long we we were weathering hell. Oh, and who was that who helped you claw your way out?
“Admit it, Dean; you don't hate me. At least not like you used to. You hate that every time you look at my face you see whatever it is you can recall of that wretched place. Well, contrary to what you've convinced yourself, I didn't send you there. In fact, I believe, if we're getting technical that would be you. We're more alike than you realize. Come to think of it, I'll bet you have more in common with me than with that little brother of yours now. Wonder what Sammy would think if he knew that.”
Bela paused to take a breath as she increased her pace, before turning and looking at Dean once more.
“Oh, don't go worrying your pretty little head off; I won't tell him. I don't want to think about that place any more than you do. Just do me a favor: next time you feel the need make up some excuse to keep your brother from finding out all your precious little secrets, try not to include me in your web of lies. I may not be innocent, but I've enough things to claim blame for without you.”
She was bleeding and crying, really quite a mess, but she hadn't stopped to notice. Somehow, she never considered that if she made it out they'd all treat her just the same. Possibly because the thought of making it out had seemed unfathomable. Still, even she deserved a second chance.
As she wiped her matted hair from her face she turned once more, exasperated. “I don't have a car.” At first it was just a statement, a meaningless emotionless statement. Then a pathetic laugh followed. “I don't have a car.”
When no response came she collapsed to the ground. What was the point anyway? It's not like she could actually help. Except she was pretty sure this once she could. That's when the tears started flowing. Try as she might to conceal them, she couldn't, making the whole thing all the more intolerable. “I have a book, one that could possibly help us. But no car, hence no way to get it...”
